Welcome Students and Parents to third grade! It's been a wonderful summer, sharing time with family and friends, going to the pool with my sister, niece and nephew, and enjoying the summer festivals.I hope that you are also enjoying the fun of summer.
This is going to be my last posting on my personal blog. In the future, I will communicate with you on Edline. I look forward to meeting each of you at the Meet and Greet in August!

May Watts Spirit Days- As part of the end of the year festivities, the third grade has some fun activities planned for the students.

Wednesday, 5/29- Spelling Bee- How well did you learn those spelling words? Each class will host a Spelling Bee using all the words that you learned this year.

Thursday, 5/30- End the day with Jeopardy. Test your skill against classmates over material learned throughout the year.

Friday, 5/31- Read In! What better way to finish the week than with a celebration of reading. Bring your favorite books from home, a towel, an extra snack, a favorite stuffed animal, and read, read, read!

Monday, 6/2- Let's end the year at the movies! The third graders will watch the movie, Charlotte's Web. Spread out your towel, bring a special snack, and drink (no pop please!), and enjoy the movie!
Tuesday, 6/3- May Watts Field Day- The students will enjoy a morning of fun activities out in the sun. The students are encouraged to bring a water bottle and wear comfortable clothes. Don't forget to apply sunscreen in the morning before coming to school!

Thank you Volunteers!

The May Watts staff will hold Volunteer Appreciation Day on Monday, May 6th to say thank you to parents and guardians who have helped out throughout the year. The theme this year is, "Volunteering is a Gift from the Heart!"

If you have volunteered at any time during the current school year, please feel free to stop by the school on Monday, May 6th, 2013, from 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. We will be holding our event in the Multi-Purpose Room. Our 3rd graders are planning something special at 2:50. Please sign in, put on a name tag, and come down to the Multi-Purpose Room for a fun-filled event!

April 29th - May 3rd

Congratulations to 3A students for earning a Citizenship Celebration! We will celebrate on Friday, May 3rd. The students have been doing a terrific job making respectful, responsible and safe choices. We have especially made strides in being quiet in the halls. As long as parents give their child permission- (feel free to use your parental discretion with this) the students may bring an electronic game or board game to school for a short game time. Remember, each student is responsible for his/her games. If anything gets damaged, broken, or taken, it is the student's responsiblity.  We will also have a short read in on May 3rd. Students may bring a small towel to school, books to read, and a small stuffed animal (the size of a beany baby or smaller.)

The Third grade students had a fantastic time at the DuPage Children's Museum! Thank you to all of our wonderful parent chaperones: Mr. Desmaratti, Ms. Karsten, Mrs. Paidipelly, and Mr. Sinnaeve! You were such great sports about running the stations of the learning lab!

Raging Waves Plunge into Fitness

Raging Waves Waterpark in Yorkville is offering a FREE day pass to any student who completes at least 25 hours of exercise between February 18^th and April 15^th, documents the exercise, and turns in the form to Mrs. Andrews. Click HERE for more information and to download the form.

A note from the office: As we get closer to the end of the school year, many students will be leaving early because of airfare price changes June 1. Please note that we will no longer be mailing report cards or anything left behind when school gets out. Parents will need to contact the office over the summer to pick up their child's report card or belongings that are left behind.

A very big thank you Mrs. Zgraggen, Mrs. Petrille, Mrs. Boiciuc, and to all of the parents who sent generous donations of decorations or did work at home for us! Thank you Mrs. Karsten, for repeatedly doing repairs in our entire hallway as the walls and building humidity are unforgiving to our projects! I apologize if I missed anyone. You are all wonderful, and I am thankful to each of you!

Week of Feb. 4th - Feb. 8th

Our rainforest party is on Wed., Feb. 6th from 1:30 - 2:30. We will be playing Rainforest Jeopardy, sampling foods from the Rainforest, and dancing the Limbo. We can't wait!

Congratulation students! The students in 3A have earned a Citizenship Celebration for being respectful, responsible, and safe citizens of May Watts. We will celebrate by having 15 minutes of game time. On Friday, 2/8, the students may bring to school a hand held electonic game if they have their parents permission. The students are responsible for their games. If they are lost or broken, it is the students responsibilty. (The students may not use the internet nor send any messages.) The students may also bring board games, decks of cards, or any other games of their choice. Let's continue to be respectful, responsible, and safe, and have a wonderful time!

We are still finalizing the date, but Terri Hancock, Director of Education from the Naperville Humane Society, will be coming to visit with her therapy dog. She will visit for 15 to 20 minutes to discuss the training of a working dog and the proper care for an animals. Please notify me if your child has a dog allergy. Thanks! Miss Anco

Dear Parents,

Valentine’s Day is not far off and prior to your shopping for this day, I am taking this opportunity to remind you of the guidelines in our Parent Handbook regarding Valentine’s and treats:

“Please do not attach any treats on Valentine’s cards (i.e. candy bars, etc.), due to the possibility of a child with a deadly peanut/nut/food allergy receiving the items. Valentine’s with candy attached will not be permitted in any classroom.” We want this day to be special for all students by keeping everyone safe and we do not want to disappoint any child who may bring items to school to give out and then is not permitted to do so.

The PTA will be providing the students with cupcakes and a Capri Sun during the party. The cupcakes are from * Whole Foods Market in Naperville. The ingredients are as follows for the cupcakes:

CAKE: SUGAR, FLOUR, CANOLA OIL, BAKING POWDER, TAPIOCA FOOD STARCH, DEXTROSE, SALT, SOY FLOUR, XANTHUM GUM, CELLULOSE GUM, BETA CAROTENE, VANILA EXTRACT, EGGS, CANOLA OIL, WATER, FROSTING: POWDERED SUGAR, BUTTER, PALM OIL, SALT, COLOR (BEET JUICE, MALTODEXTRIN, SUNFLOWER OIL). (CONTAINS: WHEAT, EGGS, SOY, MILK). The pink buttercream frosting consists of powdered sugar, palm oil shortening, unsalted butter, vanilla extract, sea salt and annatto (natural plant based food color). Please be aware the cupcakes may be made in an area where tree nuts are available.

If your child is unable to have the treat provided because of allergies, you should have already notified the school nurse of this situation. You are asked to provide your child with a treat that he/she can have if they have allergies to the cupcakes being served.

Happy New Year and welcome back! I missed my students over break and was thrilled to see your happy faces today! :)

As an extension to our Habitats Unit, we have asked the third graders to research something interesting about the rainforest. On Dec. 18th, the students brought home a letter on green paper about a creative project on the Rainforest. This project is to be completed at home and is a great chance for students to show their creativity. The projects are due on Jan. 22nd. The students will present their projects and knowledge to the class. The letter gives them various options, but students are free to choose rainforest topics that are not on the list. Please encourage your child to be creative! Students may use a variety of resources to help them with their project.

Animal Research- The students will be also be researching an animal from the rainforest. We will devote some time in class to finding resources, but students are encouraged to look for resources at home. The children can bring home their flashdrives so that they can store any information or pictures that they find. They will have time to research a bit during school, and then they will create a power point presentation at school using a template that we created.
  
There will not be a spelling test this week: Jan. 7th  - 11th. Instead, we will review previous lists and skills and play some spelling games!

On Friday, December 21, we will be holding our holiday parties from 2:30 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. for all our students. Two room parents or their designees will run the parties for the children. Due to space limitations, we ask that you refrain from attending these parties.

The PTA will be providing the students with cupcakes and a Capri Sun during the party. The cupcakes are from * Whole Foods Market in Naperville. The ingredients are as follows for the cupcakes: vanilla cupcakes contain eggs, milk, soy and wheat, sugar, enriched wheat flour, dry egg whites, palm oil, leavening, dextrose, modified food starch, dry egg yolk, natural flavor, salt, non-fat milk solids, sorbitan monostearate, soy lecithin, soybean oil, cellulose gum, xanthan gum, water, and canola oil. The frosting consists of powdered sugar, palm oil shortening, unsalted butter, vanilla extract, sea salt and annatto (natural plant based food color).

If your child is unable to have the treat provided because of allergies, please send the school nurse a note informing us of this no later than Thursday, December 13, 2012. She needs to compile a list of what students cannot have the cupcakes. You are asked to provide your child with a treat that he/she can have if they have allergies to the cupcakes being served.

Dear Parents,

 

                On Wednesday, October 31, May Watts School will celebrate a Fall Festival and Halloween Parade.  Various activities integrating curriculum will be occurring throughout the day in all Kindergarten through Grade 5 classrooms.  The parade will proceed from the north gym doors and finish up at the south gym doors, weather permitting.  We will walk around the building on the sidewalk areas.  Please keep this area clear of people, dogs, strollers, etc.  The parade will occur at 2:00 p.m. The parade will need to continuously move forward so please do not stop the parade to take photos or talk to your child.  In case of inclement weather (i.e. threat of rain), the parade will be cancelled.  We will follow the same criteria for any outdoor recess.

 

                The PTA will sponsor room parties for the children.  The parties will run from:

Kindergarten - 5                   2:30 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.

 

Children must be in attendance throughout the day in order to participate in the parade and party.

 

                Children will be permitted to wear costumes and clothing to school that does not interfere with physical education, lunch, and outdoor recess.  Accessories (props, masks, etc.) need to be carried to school in a bag and will be permitted to be used and/or worn for the parade only.  Since it will be the responsibility of your child to dress himself/herself, please consider this when choosing his/her costume.

 

                If your child will require make-up or colored hair spray for his/her costume, please apply the make-up or spray at home prior to sending him/her to school.  No make-up or spray should be brought to school.  Costumes should be appropriate in taste for elementary school children with no adult or violent themes, and not so big as to cause problems walking in halls or through doors.  Children should be able to see adequately so as not to have an accident.  Anything resembling a weapon (gun, sword, knife, sticks, etc.) should be left at home.

Hello 3A Parents,

My name is Mary Beth Nosek (Charlie's mom), and I am the room parent for this year. I'll be planning the volunteer list for the classroom parties and coordinating some of the volunteer opportunities in the classroom, and at May Watts this year. To get things started, I'm looking for 3 things:

1. Most importantly, school policy does not allow the teacher to provide me with a list of all the parent's emails. In order to be included my distributoin list for this year, please send me (nosek@comcast.net) the following information so you can be informed of any volunteer activities throughout the year.

- child's name

-email address to be included in my distribution list for this year.

 

If I do not receive your email, I will not be able to include you in the room parent distribution list and you may miss out on valuable information.

2. The PTA will host 3 parties in the classroom this year; Fall, Holiday and Valentines day. The parties are always in the afternoon. If you are interested in volunteering for one of the holiday parties, please provide me with the holiday(s) for which you would like to volunteer. With a partner, you would be responsible for planning the party activities, reviewing them with Ms. Anco and running the classroom during the party. I'll assign parties based on who I hear from first, and provide more details to you at that time.

3. Ms. Anco will have a number of opportunities for volunteers in and out of the classroom during the year. To make it easy for Ms. Anco to find volunteers, please also let me know if you are interested in any of the following opportunities (all dates/times tbd):

- Math Explorations (in classroom volunteer helping with small groups).

- Other classroom volunteer opportunities

- Out of classroom help (cutting, copying, sharpening pencils, etc...).

Last Week of School

Dear 3A Parents and Students,
Thank you so much for your special gifts and gift cards! It was so thoughtful of you to think of me! My heart is filled with gratitude because of your kindness and generosity!
The end of the school year is quickly approaching! The students have worked extremely hard throughout third grade and have learned a great deal. Your children demonstrate their skills as readers, writers, thinkers, and problem solvers each day, and it has been exciting to see their growth!
It's been my pleasure being your child's teacher. Thank you for everything that you've done at home to raise such wonderful, amazing children! They are a beautiful reflection of your families.
I wish each of you a safe, healthy, wonderful summer with your families!

4th Quarter

Important Dates:
The Third Graders are learning about Westward Expansion and the Oregon Trail. We began playing an exciting Oregon Trail Game, so be sure to ask your child about the challenges that their family has faced along the way. This game teaches teamwork, problem solving, math computation, and reading comprhension skills. It's a great way to engage students in their learning!

Welcome to the Third Grade! I am honored to be a part of your lives during this important year of learning. I know it will be an amazing year!
I look forward to meeting you on 8/17/11 at the Meet and Greet! There will be labelled bins in the classroom for your gym shoes, art smocks, kleenex, loose leaf packs, dry erase markers, glue sticks, and other important items that would otherwise overwhelm your desk. :) See you on Wednesday!
